“Speaking in Tongues” with Talking Heads

Speaking in Tongues was the 5th studio album from the iconic Talking Heads discography.

Released in 1983, it’s full of classic 80’s funk and rock that leaves a groove in you forever. The album was the American’s breakthrough record giving the band their first (and only) top 10 hit with “Burning Down The House”.

Fill your cloud with the sound below:

The tour of the album was documented in Jonathan Demme’s film Stop Making Sense which led to a brilliant live album of the same name. Acoustic versions of “Psycho Killer” and “Once in a Lifetime” make this an essential to your collection.

Carina Round – Deranged and Divine

This self curated collection from Wolverhampton born Carina Round, brings together, for the first time, material spanning from 2001 to 2015 taken from her first four critically acclaimed albums: ‘The First Blood Mystery’, ‘The Disconnection’, ‘Slow Motion Addict’, ‘Tigermending’, as well as the EP ‘Things You Should Know’, home to the included track ‘For Everything a Reason’ which featured on the TV series ’American Horror Story: Murder House’. Complimented with two previously unreleased recordings, the bewitching ‘Gunshot’ and an alternate version of the track ‘Want More’, this collection perfectly illustrates the uniqueness of Round’s voice, barbed wire lyrics and a catalogue of haunting and beautiful songs.

As one of the UK’s most enigmatic songstresses and extraordinary performers, Round’s music has also won her fans and collaborators amongst highly regarded musicians including Maynard James Keenan, Lou Reed, Ryan Adams, Billy Corgan, Dave Stewart and Brian Eno, amongst many others. ‘Deranged to Divine’ is a retrospective not only for Carina’s passionate fan base, who have avidly supported her musical output and extensive touring, celebrating her as one of Britain’s most evocative, diverse and restless artists.

For Carina, now based in California and currently working on a new solo record, ‘Deranged to Divine’ also serves as the ideal introduction to her work as a solo artist to fans of Puscifer, the electro-industrial alterna-sunstrokers founded by Tool’s Maynard James Keenan, of which Round is also a member. Puscifer are currently enjoying international success with their recent album ‘Money Shot’ and it’s accompanying sold out tour. Beautifully packaged, with career spanning imagery by acclaimed photographers and a complete set of lyrics selected and compiled by Carina, ‘Deranged to Divine’ is a terrific addition to anyone’s record collection, and an essential one to any fan of Carina Round.

Upbeat new single ‘Diggin’ it Deep Down’ from Norell & The Dub Factory

Norell and The Dub Factory have a deep rooted love of upbeat, positive vibes highlighted by their exciting new single ‘Diggin’ it Deep Down’, which is set for a release of mid June – right in time for summer.

The spirit of their feel-good sound combines the roots of the band members’ Italian heritage including the enigmatic vocal passion of Norell with the superb guitar licks of Valter Vincenti, who is also working with the reggae star, Alborosie.

It is perhaps the unique blend of cultures that most deeply reflects why this 5 piece feel so many should end up ‘diggin’’ their new track, with members from Italy, Japan and the UK all playing their part.

Our key aim,’ explains Norell, ‘Is to deliver a simple message with clear and direct lyrics to connect immediately with the listener. Our connection with fans is very important to us giving them music that reflects  life experiences creating a real and strong bond with our fans and those who we hope discover our music.

DSC_7743

We want to make people feel like dancing and that is why we believe our live set is so important ,’ Eleonora continues , ‘Without losing the idea of sharing important messages and concepts through our songs, if people dance to our music first , they will then we feel discover a meaning and a story behind the grooves. In addition, we believe strongly in supporting the LGBT community and i guess due to the cultural mix within the band feel strongly about standing up  for human rights causes, children’s rights and so on, which may be unusual for what many may think is a pop band.

The group’s powerful vocals and infectious beats stem from an array of different influences including the likes of Joss Stone, Janis Joplin and Damian Marley. They also take heavy influence from Belgian soul/reggae artist Selah Sue, who at some stage they would love to try and support.

Norell & The Dub Factory could be one of the unsigned artists to watch out for this summer, so check them live, and get to know them better through their tantalising new song, ‘Diggin’ it Deep Down’.

‘Diggin’ it Deep Down’ is out 15th June

ARROWS OF LOVE release new video for ‘Toad’ // See them June 2nd performing in London with members of Bo Ningen

“Alongside their trademark psychotic heaviness, there’s a sense of maturity about them now.” – NME

“Everything’s F*cked stands tall with the best of them. Its eleven tracks could quickly become your soundtrack to morning, noon, and night.” The Line Of Best Fit

Following the acclaimed debut album, ‘Everything’s F*cked’, explosive art-rock collective Arrows Of Love return with their brand new single, ‘Toad’, out now via Tape Records and on limited edition vinyl and tape via Strong Island Recordings.

A precursor to their anticipated second album, ‘PRODUCT’, ‘Toad’ is a biting anthem of pure grit and emotion reminiscent of the likes of Fugazi and The Jesus Lizard, with stoner riffs and a recording that stands up to the bands energetic live reputation. The track was produced by Mikko Gordon (Thom Yorke, Gaz Combes), in the studio he built himself at Goldsmiths University, and mastered by Bob Weston of Shellac.

The 5-piece led by co-writers Nima and Nuha recently found themselves backed by the UK’s highly competitive PRS Momentum Music Fund. After accepting an invite from CMJ Music Marathon the band confirmed a string of US dates, followed by a headline London show with Parallel Lines before the recording of their follow-up could finally begin.

Arrows Of Love are, above all, a live phenomenon. Originally aligned with the early East London wave of bohemian rock bands, it was their fiercely independent and creative drive that has taken them across the globe, to the likes of SXSW and End of the Road, to sharing stages with the likes of Buzzcocks, British Sea Power, 80’s Matchbox B-Line Disaster, The King Blues and many more. It’s on stage where London’s own Arrows truly hit home.

Now, gearing up for the release of ‘PRODUCT’, the band are set to prove themselves the real deal. Drawing comparisons to the discordant, emotive musicianship of Sonic Youth to the raw power of McClusky, this second LP sees a band fully diversified, ready to release something truly unique.

Live Dates

JUN 2: UK – London – NTS Radio “Tunnel Vision” Live Show – Filmed for NTS TV (with Bon Ningen’s Yuki)

SEPT 2-4: UK – END OF THE ROAD FESTIVAL

Norwegian pop singer Line Mari releases catchy and crisp single ‘Crush’

Hailing from Norway, fresh pop singer Line Mari releases this rock-infused pop song set to appear on her upcoming album.

Featuring some gorgeous vocals and crisp production, ‘Crush’ was recorded with the help of producer Rob Cass who has worked with the likes of Robbie Williams, Will Young and Paloma Faith.

Having played guitar and piano since the age of 10, Line has long had a passion for music, her mother often telling her she could feel her dancing in the womb. She started writing her own songs and performing to people as a late teenager, although she was very shy at first. However, this shyness also helped to fuel her songwriting, making her lyrics more personal and introspective.

Releasing her debut EP Fly High Fly Low in 2014, Line has already gained some recognition in Norway, her EP receiving acclaim from critics including a top score of 6 from Utropia. Her single ‘Why do I Cry’ was even played on national radio.

“Line Mari’s voice is just indescribably amazing’ –  Elza Böröndy, Utropia

A highly versatile musician, Line not only sings and writes her own music, she also plays a number of instruments include guitar, piano and harmonica (she is currently also learning to play the fiddle). She has a keen interest in vintage music and vintage guitars and owns several custom made guitars and her own custom-made pedal-board.

Line was born in Tromsø, also living for some time in Svalbard, one of the most Northerly inhabited places in the world. As a child, she grew up regularly witnessing the beauty of the Northern Lights, as well as once having a close encounter with a polar bear whilst at Kindergarten.

Having already played a gig in Bedford and recorded in London, the singer is now looking to spread word of her talents to the UK.

Impressive electronic rework of Adam & the Ants’ Kings of the Wild Frontier by Johnny Normal (Featuring Marco Pirroni)

A little soundcloud promo for you!

Electronic musician Johnny Normal delivers this shiny synth-driven rework of Adam & the Ants’ 1980 classic album Kings of the Wild Frontier.

Reaching number 1 in the UK album chart and spawning three hit singles ‘Kings of the Wild Frontier’, ‘Dog Eat Dog’ and ‘Antmusic’, the original Kings of the Wild Frontier has left its legacy on the world.

Johnny Normal’s download only rework celebrates 36 years since the original release, and sees the talented producer recording his own unique versions of all of the songs. The album features double Ivor-Novello Award-Winning Ants songwriter and guitarist Marco Pirroni.

Listen to the KOTWF promo video here:  https://youtu.be/_GYlhLfnxNw

Listen to the Johnny Normal KOTWF brief audio taster promo here:

https://soundcloud.com/abnormal-productions

The album project was initially the idea of Adam Ant himself, who liked the style of Johnny’s music.

As Johnny explains: ‘My version of KOTWF is not meant as a copycat album as we could never improve on such a classic, rather an Ant fan’s homage to the fabulously exciting original record by Adam, Marco and co which had such an impact on my life and the lives of millions of the MTV generation.

The project sees Johnny teaming up with close friend and guitarist Psycho Pete and backing vocalist/bass player Izzie voodoo.  Whilst on tour supporting Adam Ant, Johnny and Psycho played several of their own electronic interpretations of Ants songs, performing to crowds of up to 3000 people. The performances were well-received by audience members, cementing the idea for the duo to create their own electronic cover album.

In 2014, the project came to a frightening halt when Johnny Normal was hospitalised in three intensive-care units with a succession of life-threatening illnesses. His life support was turned off twice and he was expected not to survive. Beating the odds, he pulled through, his family requesting that the unfinished album be played whilst he was in his coma, spurring him on to fight death. ‘I have no doubt this provided me with a subconscious link to the outside world and aided my recovery,’ Johnny has stated.

Appealing to both Adam and the Ants fans and electronic music lovers, it’s a record that all kinds of music enthusiasts can get into.

There will be an ‘album listening party event’ in London on Friday 17th June, tickets and info from www.johnnynormal.net

The album will be released Friday 17th June 2016

Legendary S’Express track remixed by Reuben Wu of Ladytron

“Mark from S’Express used to come round to my house in the early PiL days. They made very good dance records. I was quite pleased and surprised that they said I influenced them. There is no similarity in sound and approach at all, but that’s where they are getting it right. They didn’t copy.”John Lydon, taken from John Robb’s Punk Rock An Oral History

“Mark Moore! The wizard from the Mud Club. The first DJ I was a true fan of. An artist to whom I owed everything during my time in London, who’d taught me about whole areas of music I’d never known existed.”Laurent Garnier, taken from Electrochoc

“Mark was someone who introduced me to how DJing could be glamorous. He dressed very well, in gold lamé jackets, with bouffant hair and makeup. In a day and age where DJs weren’t entertaining to look at, he was actually entertaining to look at. His presence was quite something.” Harvey

“Moore was one of the first DJs to play house music in the UK. He was also the band leader of S-Express, an all-round fabuloso and a modern dandy of the highest order. We salute him, verily.” DJ History

On 27th May the legacy and influence of Mark Moore and S’Express is celebrated with ‘Enjoy This Trip’ – a collection of remixes and cover versions by artists Mark has been an influence on and friend to, including Chris & Cosey, Tom Furse from The Horrors, Horse Meat Disco and Ray Mang. The album art is a homage the punk-era work of artist Linder Sterling and is designed by another friend – Trevor Jackson.

A bundle of bonus remixes and extended versions is also available digitally including Primal Scream’s cover of ‘Mantra For A State Of Mind’, taken from their Record Store Day single.

Mark Moore is a respected and loved character, who’s deeply-ingrained in the history of UK club culture, and is hugely influential on both dance and pop music.

Having been around since the vibrant pre-house days of early 80s London, regularly attending cultural hotbed The Blitz, Mark first started DJing at Philip Salon’s legendary Mud Club when the resident DJ Tasty Tim asked him to fill in one night. Due to his extensive record collection of disco, new wave and italo Mark was a huge hit with the crowd and was immediately offered a residency, which he held for over five years.

As a regular attendee and occasional DJ at another feted London nightspot – The Wag – Mark even made it into the video for David Bowie’s ‘Blue Jean’, which casted London’s nocturnal creative elite.

Mark also held a residency at Heaven’s lauded Asylum night (which later became Pyramid). He was one of the first supporters of Chicago house and Detroit techno in Britain, (mixing it with electronic European dance music like Yello, Soft Cell and Cabaret Voltaire), alongside Colin Favor and Evil Eddie Richards. Being the first night in the UK to play house music, the venue attracted Danny Rampling, Mr C, Pete Tong, Paul Oakenfold, The Pet Shop Boys, and even Liza Minelli. This led to Rampling offering Mark guest spots at the seminal Shoom nights, and also a guest set at The Hacienda’s Zumbar party.

Having played a key part in the UK’s house music rise, Mark took things up yet another level. His idea to form S’Express with co-producer Pascal Gabriel was a natural progression from life as a regular on the club scene. Swept along on a huge wave of excitement for acid and rave culture, S’Express had a number one chart smash with ‘The Theme from S-Express’. This was their first of several worldwide hit records which helped thrust these new sounds into the world’s spotlight and positioned dance music/DJ culture as a viable force. Mark’s meteoric rise to fame – due in part to his flamboyance and fabulousness – paved the way for electronic dance music stars to come.

With Mark’s keen ear for new talent, the first S’Express album ‘Original Soundtrack’ featured vocals from a girl just starting her singing career – one Billie Ray Martin. The second LP, ‘Intercourse’, featured additional production from then then barely-known William Orbit and Carl Craig.

Mark has remixed Prince, Erasure, Malcolm McLaren, Randy Crawford, Divine & Bobby O, Dead or Alive, The B52s and Soft Cell. A (surprising) additional remix/collaboration was with Philip Glass, who Mark befriended following their work together on a version of ‘Hey Music Lover’.

Moore has written and published short stories and interviewed Siouxsie Sioux and John Waters for publications including i-D. He appeared in the documentary ‘Joy Of Disco’ and guested on a recent news program in tribute to David Bowie, both for the BBC.

A unique and eclectic DJ, complete with trademark red telephone-headphones, he still throws parties for the cognoscenti and plays choice DJ sets at some of the world’s finest clubs, and also as support for Psychic TV, Grace Jones and Scissor Sisters live shows.

In recent years Mark has been at the helm of infamous nights that carry the torch for artistic and glamorous extravagance like ‘Electrogogo’ and ‘Can Can’, which have featured DJ sets from Bobby Gillespie and Marc Almond. His newest endeavour is the ‘Private Life ‘ nights at the Victoria in Dalston), where the music policy harks back to legendary New York clubs like The Roxy and Danceteria circa ‘79 – ‘84.

Mark has also ran several labels: Splish, Stylofiction and Bone in the 90′s – followed by Umami in the noughties and his new imprint Needle Boss, whilst his recent productions include ‘Dreams Of Deja Vu’ with Roland Faber and S’Express’s ‘Excursions EP’, which featured remixes by Vanilla Ace, The Supermen Lovers, I-Robots, Punks Jump Up.

“Mark Moore is often cited as one of the UK pioneers who championed house.” Greg Wilson

Afro-pop rising star Wiyaala brings ‘Peace’ to the world and new self-titled album Wiyaala

She’s the only woman in the world singing in Sissala – and she will mesmerize you

CNN Africa

Wiyaala is a feisty young woman from northern Ghana, bursting with attitude and drive

BBC News – World – Africa

 ‘Sweet-soft-traditional-piggy-tailed-girl-gone-BAD-and-sexy-secularly-fierce-looking-rock-chick

Africa on the Blog

Set to play WOMAD this year, multi-award winning Afro-pop songstress Wiyaala has come a long way since her humble background growing up in the small Ghanaian village of Funsi.

The last few years have seen Wiyaala rise from rags to riches. Now on the cusp of becoming a worldwide star, the singer hopes to inspire others by spreading her message of love and peace, whilst also raising awareness of the injustices still taking place to this day in third-world countries all over the world.

Her new self-titled album Wiyaala has already received nationwide success in Ghana. She now hopes to establish a global audience.

Stream the single ‘Peace’ from the album here on Soundcloud:

https://soundcloud.com/wiyaala/peace

The record is a selection of vibrant Afro-pop anthems sung largely in Sissala, but with a poppy catchiness inspired by Western Culture.

As the singer explains: ‘My album is the product of my environment as a young girl growing up in a West African Village at a time when the influences of Western TV and video first impacted on the African villager …You are hearing my African heritage fusing with the sounds and techniques of western production.’

Wiyaala rose to recognition after coming first place in a 2012 Vodafone Icons reality show as part of the group Black n Peach, a year earlier emerging as the second runner-up in Ghana’s Stars of the Future talent show. She has become famous despite little radio airplay, rejecting the music industry’s ruthless commercialist side and becoming famous as a result of her live performances and what she stands for. Grace Jones, Tina Turner and Angelique Kidjo are artists that she is sometimes compared to.

Often referred to as the ‘Young Lioness of Africa’, she has become renowned for her activism, working to abolish child marriage and abuse in her home continent  as well as campaigning for women’s right to education – freedoms that we take for granted here in the Western world.

Her fierce ideals are a result of her impoverished upbringing and being a first-hand witness to social injustice. ‘At school, I have seen young teenage girls pulled out of the classroom to be married off. The next time you see them they are pregnant and selling pepper in the market… When I was small, we were often hungry. Sometimes we would catch a mouse, roast it and share it amongst 3 or 4 children.’

She is currently working on projects with The Ministry of Gender and Child Protection and UNCEF in Ghana.

Her debut album ‘Wiyaala’ is out now
